Moldova, one of the world's 20 largest wine-producing countries, will host its annual National Wine Day festival October 5-6, 2019. The country’s biggest event — celebrating its most important export — the 18th edition will include 69 of the Moldova’s most respected wineries, which will gather in Chisinau’s Great National Assembly Square to share some of the finest wines on the planet.
A focus for this year’s
National Wine Day
festival will be Moldova’s Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) wines and regions. Wine lovers from around the world will gather to honor both Moldova’s viniculture and the resulting artwork achieved through conscious creation. In recent years, Moldova’s winegrowing industry has stepped up the integration of sustainability principles. Today, the country leads the way in the effort to be more conscious about the environment, to responsibly use resources, to respect the people involved in the industry, and to preserve a heritage that has persevered for thousands of years.
will be the launch of Moldova’s new
Wine of Moldova Routes
, which make these PGI treasures more accessible than ever with specific itineraries leading travelers and guests to important winemakers — both new and established — who have helped solidify the country in the world of wine. For the first time, three routes have been created to facilitate both travel between award-winning vineyards and wineries, and to increase the enjoyment of groundbreakingly great wine.
The festival marks the end of the grape harvest and celebrates Moldova's winemaking traditions dating some 6,000 years. Large and boutique wineries alike will display sparkling, red, and white vintages ranging from dry to sweet in traditionally decorated booths.
Between tastings, guests can try national foods such as grilled meats, fruits, and placinta (traditional pastry). Additionally, 30 artists and bands will perform. Nearly 20 masterclasses, will be taught by professional sommeliers. And 10 wine tours will take place including visits to Mimi Castle, Milestii Mici, Purcari, Chateau Vartley, Asconi and Cricova wineries.
The penultimate event of the year, Moldova’s National Wine Day will be followed by the Wine Vernissage, a wine-tasting gala, on December 12th. For a full list of events (wine-related and otherwise) and more information, please see our
